We offer a premium, immersive roleplay experience where you step into the shoes of a modern-day “ninja,” executing a cinematic driving mission through Tokyo’s underground car culture.
However, to participate in this experience, absolute legal compliance is required. As a fully licensed and legally compliant tour provider, your safety is our top priority. The Japanese authorities have strict regulations for foreign drivers. To ensure a seamless and stress-free drive, please review the critical license requirements below before booking your mission.

The Absolute Rule: The 1949 Geneva Convention
If your driver’s license was issued in the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, or most of Europe, your domestic license alone holds no power here.
You must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you travel to Japan. Here is the ultimate rule: Japan legally recognizes ONLY International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention.
- [ GRANTED ]: 1949 Geneva Convention (Verify the front cover of your physical IDP booklet!)
- [ DENIED ]: 1968 Vienna Convention, 1926 Paris Convention, 1943 Washington Convention.
If your IDP has “1968” printed on the cover, it is legally invalid in Japan, and your access to our fleet will be instantly revoked.
Do You Need to Acquire a 1949 IDP?
Knowing you need the 1949 Geneva Convention format is only half the battle. The internet is full of invalid “digital IDP” scams. To ensure you secure the correct physical booklet from the authorized agency in your home country (AAA, PayPoint, etc.), follow our exact step-by-step protocol.

CRITICAL DIRECTIVE: NO DIGITAL COPIES ALLOWED
Do not bring a photocopy. Do not show us a photo on your smartphone.
Japanese law mandates that you carry the physical, original IDP booklet at all times while operating a vehicle. You must present this physical document, along with your original home country license and passport, to your guide before the drive begins. No physical document means no drive. No exceptions.

THE CLEARANCE MATRIX
| Country of Issue (License Origin) | Required Documents to Drive in Japan |
|---|---|
| USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, etc. | Physical 1949 Geneva Convention IDP + Passport + Home License |
| Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, Taiwan | Official Japanese Translation (JAF) + Original Home License + Passport |
| China, Indonesia, etc. (Not part of the 1949 convention) | Cannot drive in Japan (Riding as a passenger is welcome!) |
Special Exceptions: The Official Translation Protocol
If your license was issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan, the standard IDP rules do not apply to you. Guests from these regions must bring their original domestic driver’s license accompanied by an Official Japanese Translation. This translation cannot be done by a friend or a standard translation website. It must be officially issued by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).
How to Secure Your Official Translation (Avoid the Overseas Ban)
Japanese law strictly requires an Official Translation (usually via JAF) for drivers from these regions. However, JAF no longer accepts online applications from outside Japan. Do not wait until you land to figure this out. Discover how to use the German/Taiwanese fast-tracks, or let the NIGHTSHADE VIP Concierge handle the entire proxy process for you.

[ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ]

Can I show a digital photo of my IDP on my smartphone?
Unfortunately, no. Japanese law mandates that drivers carry the physical original booklet while operating a vehicle.
I forgot my IDP at the hotel. Can I still drive?
