Who Needs an Official Translation?
If you have read our [Complete Guide to IDP Requirements for Japan] , you know that if your driver’s license was issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan, you are exempt from standard International Driving Permit (IDP) rules.
However, your domestic license alone is not enough to drive the NIGHTSHADE TOKYO fleet. You must present an Official Japanese Translation. You cannot translate it yourself, and standard translation websites are legally invalid. The process has recently become strictly regulated, but our tactical concierge team has broken down exactly how to secure it before your mission.
PHASE 1: Before Your Flight (Securing the Translation)
🚨 CRITICAL ALERT: You Cannot Apply Directly to JAF from Overseas
As of recent updates, the JAF online application system blocks or rejects requests made from outside Japan. If you wait until you land in Japan to apply online, processing can take up to two weeks, meaning your document will likely not be ready in time for your drive.
To secure your clearance before your mission, you must use one of the following authorized alternative routes based on your home country:
Route A: The German & Taiwanese “Fast Track”
If you are from Germany or Taiwan, you have a massive tactical advantage. You do not need to use JAF or third-party agencies.
- 🇩🇪 Germany: You can obtain your official Japanese translation directly in Germany through ADAC. Secure this physical paper document before you fly.
- 🇹🇼 Taiwan: Obtain your official translation directly in Taiwan at any local motor vehicle office, or via the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO).
Route B: The NIGHTSHADE Concierge Service (Zero Stress)
For agents from Switzerland, France, Belgium, and Monaco, applying directly to JAF from overseas is impossible. We have eliminated this friction for you. You do not need to hunt for third-party proxy agencies or figure out how to use a Japanese 7-Eleven printer.

PHASE 2: After Landing in Japan (Printing the Document)
Note: If you are using the NIGHTSHADE Concierge Service, or if you obtained your physical translation directly from ADAC (Germany) or TECRO (Taiwan), you can skip this step entirely.
If you used a standard third-party proxy agency and received a Print Reference Number via email, you must print the physical document in Japan. Showing a PDF on your smartphone is strictly illegal.
You can print it 24/7 at any 7-Eleven convenience store in Japan. The machines have full English menus, and the process takes less than two minutes.
- Walk into any 7-Eleven in Japan.
- Find the multi-copy machine and select English from the language menu.
- Select “Net Print”.
- Enter the active Print Reference Number provided by your proxy agency.
- Insert 20 JPY (coins only) and print your official document.
The Final Check: The Three Essential Documents
On the night of your guided drive with NIGHTSHADE, possessing the translation is just one piece of the puzzle. You must present these three physical documents to your guide before you receive the keys:
- Your Official Translation (JAF, ADAC, or TECRO)
- Your Original Domestic Driver’s License (From your home country)
- Your Original Passport
If you leave any of these three items in your hotel room, we cannot legally allow you to drive.
